Everybody knows that it is impossible to avoid the common cold.  Having said that, simple things like hand washing will significantly lesson cold opportunities.  In a house or school where several children interact, you do not have to be a genius to guess what is being passed around among them, especially when considering what young children do with their toys before lending them to another child.  "Mine, mine, takes on a whole new meaning to mine, yours and everyone's.' 

I remember attending a very large Convention several years ago.  While in the restroom I noticed a man leave in a hurry without washing his hands.  A few minutes later a good friend of mine told he that he wanted to introduce me to the guest speaker.  What a difficult moment we all had when I was introduced to the man I had seen leaving the restroom.  I inadvertently caused a very embarrassing moment when I refused to shake his hand.

You see, as well as the unclean situation, I was more afraid of my mother and the restroom agenda she had pounded into my brain over the years of my childhood then I was of the guest speaker and surrounding witnesses.  When again all alone with my friend, I remember the look on his face when I told him the story of the guest speaker and the restroom.  My friend told me that he would never introduce me to another important person so long as he lived.  I don't think he got the point that hand washing was more important then impressing a very important person with a high position in life.  It's better to be more afraid of an infection than someone who can fire you!

While the topic is so basic, hand washing is one of the absolutely most important activities in the lives of people everywhere.  Proper hand washing can even save a life! That's right.   Avoiding various infections can prolong general health and life for untold numbers of people.
